Lot 1504
$2.50 Gold Capped Head. 1831. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Deeply reflective fields that are straw yellow with a small amount of russet toning in the periphery. Stunning with every detail razor sharp! A very lustrous example with lighter yellow and frosty devices standing out against the mirrored fields. Some faint hairlines on the obverse and reverse. Identified by two tiny tick marks at the top of the cheekbone, a small horizontal lint mark between star 4 & 5 near denticles and a second mint-made impression diagonally cross the legs of R in LIBERTY.
The narrative for the 1831 business strike quarter eagle in Gem condition, the following lot, discusses the rarity of these early Capped Bust quarter eagles. Characterized by small mintages that later met melting and all sorts of other obstacles, this series of U.S. gold rarely exists in any uncirculated grade. Proofs are even more rare, the 1831 having an estimated mintage figure of 10 coins!

NGC has graded three 1831 quarter eagles in proof, a PF63, PF64Cameo (this coin) and a single PF66 as finest. PCGS has graded three coins as well, 2 specimens in PR62 and a single PR66 as finest. It is possible these figures are high by a case or two of resubmission inflation.
Estimated Value $140,000 - 160,000.

Lot 1505
$2.50 Gold Capped Head. 1831. NGC graded MS-65. Fully reflective fields and perfect yellow gold coloration. Luster is rich and uninterrupetd across Liberty and at the borders. Fully struck with satiny frost over Liberty's capped portrait. The reverse gets the same respect and the only strike weakness that exists is at the interface of the eagle's right wing and shield. A die lump to the left of star 2 near border. Traces of a second U to the left of the first U in UNITED. This series is one of the highlights of the gold coins that our country struck and the specimen here is a gem! NGC has graded 3 in MS65 with supposedly 3 MS66 examples as finest.

This design is commonly referred to as "Kneass' modified design" and was struck from 1829-1834. As type coins, these are some of the toughest in United States numismatics. Only 25,000 pieces were struck for the entire time period of 1829-1834 and most were melted. When the Bass Sale took place, the cataloguer of that sale pointed out that only 3% of the entire mintage might exist today in all grades.
Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000.

Lot 1534
$2.50 Gold Liberty. 1855-D. Sharpness of About Uncirculated. Cleaned. The 1855-D quarter eagle had a mintage of only 1,125 pieces and is the rarest issue struck at the Dahlonega Mint. Survivors in the AU range are excessively rare and correctly graded examples in AU55 or above are considered Condition Census. This issue, along with the 1856-D quarter eagle, is generally the last and most difficult issue for the dedicated southern branch mint collector to obtain.
The present example shows signs of old cleaning, with the obverse displaying the heaviest on the device which has a slightly polished appearance. The fields are mark free and some color has toned back in the periphery and protected areas.

Lot 1539
$2.50 Gold Liberty. 1868. PCGS graded Proof 61. A low mintage proof quarter eagle with only 25 pieces struck. Light hairlines in the fields and a few ticks here and there but a very decent coin and choice for the grade. Highly reflective fields for a lower grade proof and the eagle is still quite frosty on the reverse. A shade of lavender toning on the reverse as well. Proof quarter eagles in this grade range, PR58-PR62, are quite scarce due to the fact that most that did survive were given a helping hand by past collectors and their condition preserved. A nice opportunity for the collector to acquire a more modest example of a real proof rarity. PCGS has graded only 1 in this grade and a total of only 9 proof 1868 quarter eagles have been graded in all grades (PCGS # 7894) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

$2.50 Gold Liberty. 1875. NGC graded AU-58. Deep yellow gold color with reflective fields. All devices, stars and the date are frosty. The top of Liberty's head has the hair detail fully struck and shows no sign of friction. On the reverse, the eagle also displays a full strike with no wear to be found. The fields on either side have some faint hairlines. Identified by a thin, curved scratch just above the brow. A great date from the U.S. gold series, with every denomination up to the eagle being a serious rarity (the $3.00 in proof only). Rare in all grades with the finest known specimens at NGC being a pair of MS60's and the finest known for the issue being a single PCGS MS62 example. Mintage of only 400 pieces at Philadelphia this year, the lowest mintage figure for the entire Coronet Head quarter eagle series! This is a great candidate for the sophisticated collector who wants to put together a 1875 gold set. While the 1875 half eagle and eagle bring big-time money, the quarter eagle is still quite affordable in comparison.
